Christian interpreters distinguish tongues into 2 types, in the original languages, namely Glossolalia and Xenolalia. Both types are given and done by the Holy Spirit. The language of the Spirit is one of the 9 types of gifts that the Holy Spirit performs. God's Word says that all gifts are for building oneself and others.
First, Glossolalia is a language that is spoken and comes out of our minds in order to relate to God, and experience aesthetic experiences. Glossolalia is a language that cannot be understood by humans in general, which aims to build a person with God. Glossolalia can only be understood by those who have the gift of interpreting the language of the Spirit.
Second, Xenolalia or a foreign language, a person who can speak in a language he previously could not understand. For example, this is the same case as what happened to the apostles at the Pentaconta (Acts 2: 1-13). What we remember as the day of the Pentaconta. It is the same as happened to the apostles who could preach in languages that the Gentiles could understand. Another example, such as a foreigner in Russia who suddenly can pray in Javanese.
The problem that still exists today is that many Christians say that a person is not converted if he cannot speak in tongues. The visible impact, many people insist that everyone can speak in tongues. In fact, to use various methods to be able to learn it.
Speaking in tongues is a category of spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:10) that is given by God to each person specifically as a gift, according to His will (1 Cor. 12:11). Thus it cannot be forced. So, if someone can speak in tongues, yes, be grateful. Yes, if you don't get the gift of tongues, it's up to God. Maybe God has given us another gift, without us knowing it.
